Istanbul Diptychs

The amazing mosaics in Byzantine churches were plastered over by Muslims as the Roman cathedrals were converted into Mosques. Here, Christ is holding the book of life although bound books were not invented for hundreds of years after his death. Knowing a few things about books, this young schoolboy asked me to take his picture by shouting “Photo, photo” at me and striking a pose. The knowledgeable glint in his eye echoes that of Christ and both subjects are formally attired.
